GIL STEIN PUCKS

(1992 - 1993)

Gil Stein took over from John Zeigler as commissioner of the NHL in 1992. The league also issued a new standard puck to be used by all teams commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup. The first variety issued featured his signature as 'Gilbert Stein'. This was updated to 'Gil Stein' early in the production run. In addition to this, a French version was issued for the Montreal and Quebec markets that had the league logo on the players jersey as 'LNH' instead of 'NHL'.

Unlike the 75th logo from the previous season, this puck appears to have been the only puck used in 1992-93. For the following year, team logos were to be issued on the pucks once again. However, during the initial production run, Gil Stein was replaced by Gary Bettman as league commissioner. The pucks were mothballed and new Bettman pucks were issued. These pucks have been showing up in the market and although they are not really game pucks, they were intended to be used by the NHL and are issued on the In Glas Co slug so we list them as part of the game puck series. The rarity of these pucks is questionable.
